Emotional Freedom Technique and the Power of Words Words are critically important in the practice of energy psychology. More so than traditional medical psychology, where ideas and thoughts are often inferences and generalizations – where one word can be used as a substitute or synonym for another – in energy psychology, an exact word is often necessary where a similar or related word simply will not do.
For anyone who does Emotional Freedom Technique, the immense power of words is known full well. When engaged in EFT therapy, a particular word often seems to possess a surprising dial-on-the-combination-lock ability that can promptly correct the strong emotional reaction of someone distressed by a negative emotion. Once the relationship of a particular word to the creation of a distorted energy pattern is understood, it can be used as a tool for access into the treatment of that problem. A particular word or phrase that posses a high "emotional charge" can be used within the context of EFT therapy to neutralize the negative energy pattern to which it is associated. Using the word as a key to access that part of a distressed or corrupted memory pattern, EFT can create an emotional shift that can be so fast as to be startling. Since EFT work is essentially energy therapy, healing can occur in the blink of an eye. All that is necessary is for the exact word or phrase to bring all of this together to change the energy pattern, when applied during the familiar EFT tapping process. When doing EFT, other than the tone of the voice, the primary tools are words. The words used in EFT had better be meaningful and accurate in relation to the client’s problem issue, otherwise EFT counseling is not being done, just a futile outpouring of feckless words. If the words used in the EFT process do not convey the exact thought needed to access that part of the emotional memory associated with the corrupted energy field and associated negative emotions, Emotional Freedom Techniques will not be successful.
As an example, let us take the situation in which someone, as a child, was terribly frighten while in a dark basement. Let us say in this situation, a cat suddenly jumped up and scratched this person on the face. Ever since this event this person has not only been afraid of the dark, but also had an intense hatred of cats and experiences a strong emotional reaction at the sight, thought and approach of a cat. As a result, this person reacts with irrational fear to both darkness and cats, and is none to happy being in a basement no matter how well illuminated.
During the course of an EFT therapy session to correct this irrational fear of cats and the dark, it is found that the word "cat" provokes a great emotional reaction, and so several rounds of EFT are done about cats, but in this particular case, to no success. Different variations of the EFT protocol might be tried, or even exploring the issue from different directions (forgiveness, what feeling were experienced by that child in the basement, similar situations that occurred earlier, etc.) while attempting to resolve the undesirable fear response to cats and the dark.
However, in this scenario, what is not know and not considered, is how this person has actually cataloged or referenced the traumatic event – what words are used to think about it, or what are the key words that possess a unique emotional connection to that event, that memory, that emotion.
Let us say further, that this person who was so frightened in the basement by the cat knew the cat’s name was "Blackie" and in that moment, and for all times afterward as this memory lingered just below the level of conscious awareness, it was the word Blackie that was connected to that particularly frightening event from childhood. This person, for reasons unknown and unimportant, never branded the event with the word "cat," "pet," "black cat," "Mom’s cat," ""nine-year old cat," "cat hiding in the basement who scratches me," "mouse killer," "soft and furry animal," or anything else – just "Blackie."
In order to best access that part of the memory concerning that event in an EFT therapy session, it would be very important to use the word Blackie. Using simply the word cat would likely derive improvement and release of considerable emotional stresses, but none as quickly or deeply effective as if the work included that particular word under which these emotions were stored.
To learn this information, to appreciate its importance to the process of EFT recovery, to delve a bit into the story, requires only the awareness that words are important throughout life, but especially in Emotional Freedom Technique. All that is required is the desire to do the best therapy possible, and the enthusiasm to ask a few questions and carefully listen to the answers that are usually loaded with critically important information.
Words are perhaps more important in the application of an energy psychology method like EFT, since the concept is that the therapeutic process actually ferrets a problem down its neural pathways to the eventual synaptic links that make up the memory of a particular event or person. The closer the EFT process can lead to the exact area of the brain in which this memory and related emotion reside, the more dramatic will be the EFT recovery process. Words in EFT are not a means to express an inference or substitute synonym for something else. The exact word can be seen as the exact key to enter into an exact area of the neurological memory bank. Exact words can be that important, and powerful.
